When nothing is happening in favor of you, and nobody is there to support you, your self-confidence helps you to overcome all the adversities. Self-confidence is the belief in our capabilities and the good feeling about it. So, as parents, our aim should be to make our children competent and confident to achieve whatever they want to possess in life. A self-confident human being can face all the challenges of life bravely and explore new paths to success. To boost self- confidence in a child, we have to make him feel good about himself. We have to make him feel that there is nothing impossible if he wants to achieve it with his full potential. We can’t make our children self-confident overnight. With parents’ encouragement, guidance, and performing some daily rituals, children would be grown as happy and self-confident.
SIMPLE PRACTICES TO BOOST SELF-CONFIDENCE IN A CHILD:
1. ENCOURAGE EVERY EFFORT:
We become happy and try to perform better when someone encourages us. In the same way, parents’ appreciation makes a child feel confident and motivated to try something new. Instead of criticizing him, we have to encourage him to explore new things. We have to allow him to take the initiative without the fear of failure. This kind of encouragement helps to boost self- confidence of a child. But parents have to maintain the difference between praise and encouragement. If our children achieve something, we must praise them without any hesitation. But too much praising may boost up the ego of a child, and he would look for constant approval from others for every effort.
Sometimes, we become overprotective and prevent our children from taking a bold step or risk because we doubt their capability. This hurts a child’s confidence, and gradually he becomes dependent on others. We have to make our children feel that our trust and support are always with them. This boosts their confidence and makes them feel good about themselves. They get encouraged to try new things and learn from their mistakes.
2. ASSIGN RESPONSIBILITIES:
When parents give children some responsibilities, they feel confident and try to accomplish it with perfection. Children should be allowed to make their daily routine, especially their study plan. It makes them feel empowered. They will learn to make choices and plan their activities. If we assign our children some household chores like setting the table for dinner, folding the laundry, cleaning the study table, it would help them to develop a sense of responsibility and boost self-esteem and confidence. When a child completes a task and gets appreciation for it, he becomes happy and confident.
3. INVOLVE IN DECISION MAKING:
we have to involve our children in the decision- making process where we discuss less serious issues like a weekend or holiday planning and small family problems. In this process, children gain self- confidence because they get the opportunity to get familiar with some real-life problems. It will expose them to the consequences of a wrong decision. Taking the right decision after judging the situation, and analyzing available options, boosts self-confidence in children.
4. DON’T SET A GOAL BEYOND REACH:
We should always be mindful while setting goals for our children. There should be a balance between ability and expectation. If we impose rules without reasons and insist on them to follow, they might end up in building low self-esteem in them. Besides, an unrealistic goal can cause frustrations among children. So recognize your child’s limitations and set a realistic goal. Because if a child works hard and manages to achieve his goal, a sense of accomplishment boosts his self-esteem and confidence.
5. HELP HIM TO DISCOVER HIS STRENGTH:
Parents should guide a child to discover his strength and weakness. His true potential and qualities should be nourished so that he becomes successful in his endeavor. If we value a child’s strengths and channelize them in the right direction, the child gets a comfort zone. It makes the struggle easier for the child, and consequently, he becomes self-confident. In addition to this, we should allow him to follow his passion and interest. If all his talents get the exposure, they work in harmony to develop the child to the fullest extent.
6. TEACH TO HANDLE FAILURE:
Most of the parents think that struggle and failure may hurt the self-esteem and confidence of a child. But it is an inevitable part of the process of making him self-confident. When a child learns to handle failure effectively, nobody can stop him from being successful in life. Failure teaches him to follow a different path, a different strategy with more confidence. We have to make him understand how to proceed further with the lessons he has learned from the mistakes. Repeated errors and corrections in a subject would help a child to master the subject and undoubtedly contribute to boosting self- confidence.
So, to build confidence, children have to make choices, take risks, and be strong to bear the consequences. And parents have the responsibility to provide support with love and care to their children whatever comes the way. Don’t criticize them or ridicule at their choices. We have to make them capable so that they take the right decisions with confidence and achieve all the success and happiness in life.
