How to Develop Good Habits in children (with a special Morning Routine)

good habits to be included in the morning routine

‘If you believe you can change – if you make it a habit – the change becomes real”.  Whatever we do regularly becomes our habit, and these habits change our destiny. So if we include good habits in our daily routine, it can bring positive changes that would transform our lives. Though anybody can adopt good habits at any stage of life, childhood is the most appropriate period for developing these habits. It becomes more challenging for adults to be acclimatized to something new. On the other hand, if we teach good habits to our kids, it will help to mould their attitude and behaviour. As a result, they would grow up as better individuals with the inner strength to achieve the impossible. So parents should teach their kids good habits from the school level so that they can absorb and integrate these into their lifestyle.

Generally, parents who want to incorporate good habits into their children’s lives start it with a constructive morning routine. A well-planned and effective morning routine for kids can keep them motivated for the whole day. Once when schools are in full swing, waking up early, brushing teeth, having a shower, eating breakfast and getting ready for school – this is the routine for most of the children. What if we bring a drastic change to this morning routine to give our children a mental boost up for a happy, peaceful, and productive day?

LIFE CHANGING GOOD HABITS TO INCLUDE IN THE MORNING ROUTINE FOR KIDS:

1. MAKE THEM FEEL CONNECTED:

This is one of the important good habits for adults as well as kids to start an ideal morning routine. If we start a day by yelling at our children, it may affect their productivity throughout the day. So, start the day with a warm hug when your child wakes up. It makes him feel loved and connected. A child follows his parents’ instructions happily when he is well-connected to them. A warm hug works as the motivation for a child to start the day with a positive vibe. He becomes less resistant and cooperates with the parents. So we have to keep our tone happy and cheerful and pamper him in the morning. Guide him in a delicate manner to perform his daily activities with a happy and relaxed mood.

2. PRACTISE MEDITATION:

Meditation helps kids as well as adults to regulate their minds, increases concentration and attention span, and reduces stress and anxiety. When parents practise meditation along with their children, it becomes easier for the children. After waking up in the morning, if children practise a few minutes of meditation, it may affect their physical and mental growth immensely. Most of the highly successful persons around the world practise meditation in the morning to stay focused on their goals. Meditation makes a child calm and peaceful, focused and poised. There are endless ways you can follow to meditate. Listening to meditative music or just chanting “Ohm” can be great ways to uplift your spirit from the chaos of your surroundings. So, if you really want to contribute to the success of your children, encourage them to include meditation in their morning routine.

3. ENCOURAGE TO READ A GOOD BOOK:

The habit of reading books has so many benefits that directly or indirectly contribute to making a child successful and happy in life. Normally, in a busy morning routine, there is no scope to involve children in anything else. But during this pandemic when children are at home all day, we have enough opportunity to develop some good habits in them. Reading a good book in the morning helps to jumpstart the day with a positive attitude. We should make available the books written by famous personalities, Encyclopedia, autobiographies of successful people, or books about great inventions, anything that can provide food for thought to our children. A good book can transform the thought process and inspire a child to dream of achieving the impossible.

Besides these, parents have the responsibility to teach the children the difference between good habits and bad habits and make them able to choose the good one. Children imitate parents’ actions and behaviours and start to assimilate them into their lives. It may seem challenging sometimes, but we have to inculcate the right manners and healthy habits to motivate our children.

GOOD HABITS LIST FOR CHILDREN TO FOLLOW:

1. REGULAR EXERCISE:

Owing to the pressure of school, homework, and other activities, children get less playtime now. An increasing interest in electronics gadgets is also responsible for the sedentary lifestyle of children. As a result, health hazards like obesity, attention problem, the emotional problem are increasing day by day. So, parents have to encourage children for walking, playing outside, and regular exercise.

Regular exercise – a good habit to include in the morning routine

If it is not possible to follow a morning routine exercise, then in the afternoon, at least 30 minutes workout at home with simple exercises would be enough.

2. HEALTHY EATING:

Generally, kids love to indulge in fast foods. But it’s the responsibility of parents to create a good food habit. Plan your meal with well-balanced and nutritious foods. To satisfy their cravings for fast food, sometimes we have to treat them with homemade pizza, noodles, cake, or cookies. We have to ensure that they are consuming the sufficient amount of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other healthy foods along with enough water. We have to teach them nutrition facts and vital information about packaged foods and fast foods. Gradually they would develop a habit of healthy eating.

3. CLEANING UP OWN MESS:

From as early as the age of 3, teach your child to keep his toys back at the right places after playing. Tidying up his own study table every day and arranging the books, notebooks, pencils, crayons in their proper places, is a good habit every child should follow. Putting the dirty clothes in the laundry bag, used utensils into the washbasin – all these are not difficult tasks but help in teaching kids responsibility at home. At the same time, they develop the habit of not littering at public places.

4. BE RESPECTFUL TO OTHERS:

We should teach our children to respect others irrespective of their age. Kids start listening patiently to others and showing decent and polite behavior to everybody if parents model this kind of attitude to others.  Courteous, humble, and decent persons are liked and loved by everybody. So, we should teach our children compassion, gratitude, and honesty from an early age. All these values and good habits make our children calm, composed, and happy.

5. MAINTAIN DAILY ACTIVITY CHECKLIST:

After all the hustle-bustle of a busy day, make your children go through their daily activity checklist. If a child writes down his activities and achievements of a day before going to bed, it helps him to stay focused. It would help him to analyze how much he has done on that day and how much he has to perform on the next day to achieve the target. Children should be guided to maintain a gratitude list and a list of good works he has done on a day. Depending on a child’s age, parents can help to prepare this checklist.

Following a daily routine makes our kids comfortable with their activities, and they perform their chores without any question or stress. The daily repetition of these activities results in forming good habits for kids and make them well-equipped to confront the challenges of the competitive world.

As an Early Childhood Education teacher, I definitely agree with all of these tips. All of them can make a very positive difference in a child’s life. I especially love the ideas of making them feel connected and encouraging them to read a book to be incorporated into morning routine for kids. All of this will definitely have a positive impact on their development too.
