Are you teaching your Child Leadership Skills for a better tomorrow?

Are you teaching your Child Leadership Skills for a better tomorrow?

Looking at the present situation, we can easily predict that the world will be completely different and fiercely competitive when our children are grown-ups and ready to venture out into the world. So, it is our responsibility to make them well equipped with some leadership skills so that they can face the challenges of life as well as bring positive changes in the world. “Leaders are not born, they are made”.  Every child has the potential to be a leader and it is our duty to nurture these leadership qualities. Generally, we associate leadership with power. But leadership is the ability to work with others as a team to achieve a common goal.

  • Leadership teaches a kid to work as a team and collaborate with others to achieve something great.
  • Leadership changes the mindset and perspective of a person.
  • As leadership skills allow children to solve problems, it makes them more efficient in taking control of their life.
  • Different leadership activities for kids provide many opportunities to grow them as more socially compatible with each other.
  • It is always a great thing to raise a courageous and righteous leader who can contribute to the well being of mankind.

For the personal and professional development of our children, we should try to develop leadership skills in our children. And it becomes more effective when we start it early. Irrespective of the educational qualifications, anyone can become a leader if he nurtures some essential leadership qualities with patience.

To nurture child leadership parents have to be focused and involved in the process. In some cases, they have to actively participate by engaging in leadership activities for kids.

Sports is the most effective way to teach leadership skills to our children. Understanding the team objective and perform collectively to achieve that  – this basic quality of a leader can be developed in our children if we allow them to take part in different sports from a young age. From sports only,  they can learn to trust other teammates, recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and set up the strategy accordingly to be successful.

Sports also teach how to make the right decision even under tremendous pressure, the ability a leader must-have. Maintaining your cool while coming out of your comfort zone, is not everyone’s cup of tea. A true leader only can do this and we can help our kids to acquire this power by encouraging them to take part in sports.

Successful leaders don’t hesitate to take the right decision even in the most adverse situation. To inculcate leadership qualities in our children we should involve them in decision making on less serious family issues or while planning a family trip or a party. Our children feel empowered when we ask for their opinion on anything. Regardless of their age, we should allow our children to make little choices. At the same time, we should help them understand the consequences of their decision. In an age-appropriate manner, we should teach them to analyze other options available to them.

Letting them taking decisions on their own enhances their confidence and eventually, they grow their own voice.  Teachers can contribute a lot to teaching leadership skills to students by engaging them in various leadership activities. How confidently someone takes decision determines whether others would follow him or not. Among his peer group, how a student analyzes a problem and takes an unbiased and appropriate decision, helps developing child leadership.

Nobody can be a leader without excellent communication skills. To inspire others and build a relationship with them we need proper communication. Listening to others patiently and understanding them is a crucial part of communication. Parents can teach children how to appreciate others, how to express disagreement without hurting anyone’s feelings by practicing these themselves. Moreover, communication is the key to influence others by your mission and vision of life. Through effective communication, a leader can share what he has to say and motivate and stimulate others to follow that.

Parents can enhance the communication skills of children by engaging with them in conversation regarding a book or a TV show or experience in the school. Taking part in different school activities also help a kid improve his communication skills.

By incorporating positive attitudes in their behavior, parents influence children to adopt the right kind of attitude towards life and the people around them. Learning to respect others while having faith in himself, enables a child to take responsibility. He should have the flexibility to accept his weaknesses and failures as well as criticism from others. Parents are completely responsible for nurturing a positive attitude in their children by showing gratefulness and compassion to others.

We can easily understand that the future world will be very uncertain for our children. In the competitive world, to stand out from the rest, creativity will be the most significant factor. It is our job to prepare our children for the future. A creative mind that embraces all the possibilities and works for improvements can save an organization as well as a society from setbacks. Instead of helping a child with his school projects, we should let him do on his own. We should encourage our children’s creativity by allowing themselves to plan a party, or by simply baking their favorite muffins or cookies together with different toppings or varying ingredients. If a child plays with blocks, tiles, play dough, and dress-up clothes like toys, his creativity gets boost up.

Parents can contribute a lot to developing leadership qualities in a child by taking part in some volunteer works along with them. Raising a fund to help needy people, donating generously to the distressed people during a natural disaster, all these acts of kindness inculcate leadership qualities in our kids. A belief in one’s own self that he or she can bring a positive change in the society ignites the passion that a successful leader possesses. Student leadership is built on the foundation of volunteering as it provides the opportunity to work for a greater purpose and create an excellent network.

We can play a big role in child leadership by allowing children to participate in different volunteer works. These works teach them to work in a team following someone’s guideline within a time limit and communicate with people of all ages and from all strata of society.  Coming out of his comfort zone and being connected with others,  volunteer works generate empathy and confidence in a child.

The ability to handle failure successfully is the most important leadership quality. Most of the time, we become eager to take the share of success and ready to blame others for failure. But if we teach our children how to handle failure like a boss from an early age, it will help them to analyze the failure and set the next course of action. Instead of blaming others, a true leader learns from the mistakes and failures and explores a new path to achieve success.

We really struggle with decision making! I believe in allowing my kids to make decisions and then at some point I realized that they were trying to make decisions that were not within their scope. I then tried to step back and limit the decision making a bit more. It is such a balancing act!

This was a great read! We always try to include our older son in certain decisions. He’s old enough now to understand so we talk through the possible options and ask him what he thinks. It’s funny because he sometimes brings things up that we didn’t even think of.

Oooh your last point is so spot on. Leadership skills are so important for kids to learn and yet, it’s not often the focus. I’m so thankful I was part of a group growing up that specifically taught us these skills going through all the steps you broke down. It was life-changing!

I strongly believe in what you said, we should try to let kids take small decisions and also encourage them to be independent.
